What is Pilates?

Pilates originated in the early 20th Century by Joseph Pilates as a form of rehabilitation for victims of World War I. Today, Pilates involves a series of mind and body exercises designed to strengthen the core muscles, restore postural awareness, improve body alignment, increase flexibility and balance and prevent further injuries.

Clinical Pilates

Clinical Pilates is Pilates instructed by a fully qualified physiotherapist. Physiotherapists are university qualified health professionals trained to assess and treat a wide range of injuries. Our physiotherapist has trained extensively through Polestar Pilates which is one of the few internationally recognised Pilates teacher-training organisations. Using this training in combination with physiotherapy knowledge, Clinical Pilates provides a fantastic platform for rehabilitation of many common injuries and conditions.

How to enrol

At Stirling Health Professionals, we offer private and group clinical Pilates classes. Before you to start our classes, our physiotherapist completes a one-on-one Pilates assessment with you. This assessment allows you to discuss your current and past medical history and any injury concerns that might affect your ability to perform the exercises. On completion of your Pilates assessment you can enrol in private or group Pilates classes.

Private Pilates classes

Private Pilates classes are 30-minute individualised sessions instructed by our physiotherapist. You will be guided through a range of mat-based exercises to meet your specific goals, taking into account your condition and injuries. Private Pilates classes are a great way for you to start Pilates, particularly if you are unsure or wish to build confidence before attending group classes. Private classes can be booked during normal physiotherapy consultation times.

Group Pilates classes

Group Pilates classes run for 60-minute and are led by our physiotherapist. Our classes are aimed at an intermediate level of difficulty, but variations are given throughout each class to make exercises suitable for all ages and levels of experience.

We focus on mat-based exercises with the additional use of theraband, stability balls, free weights, foam rollers, exercise balls and balance discs throughout the term to assist in exercise progression.

Our classes are small (8 people) to ensure that you can receive supervision and hands-on feedback to be able to perform the exercises in a way that is both safe and effective.

Our group Pilates classes run for 10 consecutive weeks.

*Health insurance rebates may apply depending on your private health fund and level of cover. Health insurance claims can be processed on the spot for one-on-one Pilates assessment and private classes. Group classes claims can be processed at the completion of the 10 week term. Please contact your private health fund to check your eligibility for rebates.
